Samsung Galaxy S8 users report device freezes in Multi Window after Oreo
Generally speaking, updates are expected to pluck out bugs, but the irony is that’s not the case most of the times, and Android Oreo is no exception either. It was in the later half of March when Oreo started rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. Soon after, users who upgraded started complaining of their units freezing on exiting multi window – which is used to jump back and forth between apps while multi-tasking.
Going by reports pouring on different help forums (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), the problem specifically shows up while using YouTube upon exiting Multi Window (or split screen) to open the app in full screen mode. Take a look at how some of the affected S8/S8+ users explain the problem:
Using YouTube with another app (I was using Relay for Reddit) in split screen mode, and dragging the divider to make YouTube go full screen again while a video is playing causes my entire S8 to freeze. Nothing works except turning the screen on or off. Only a force shut down fixed it.
It occurs whenever i use YouTube with the Multi Window. I am guessing YouTube is the problem, for every time a video or song is playing and i press the Multi Window, it freezes and if i press the power button, it goes black then the frozen screen pops up faintly.
After I was done with split screen mode, I took the little sliding bar and made YouTube the main app I was using. Instead of making YouTube full screen, it froze the whole screen. After about 5 minutes of waiting, it comes up with a message, “System UI has stopped working.” then after about another 3 minutes of a black screen, it goes to the lock screen.
I have found that when I use multi window and then drag the screen back down to make it full screen the whole phone freezes.
@SamsungMobileUS are yall coming out with another update soon? My phone (S8) keeps freezing when I try to exit the split screen feature.

Split view has been a mess since the Oreo update on the S8. Crashes the UI every time I exit it by swiping down the divider.

The following user shared video clearly showcases the freezing issues (00:28 second on wards):
Suggesting that the problem could be limited to YouTube only, one of the moderators on official Samsung forums recently addressed the complainants saying:
Then it may just be that we will have to wait on an update, or an update on YouTube’s side.
No one from YouTube has offered a word on the matter yet, and we couldn’t find users of any other device complaining about this issue. So it’s difficult to pin point who is to blame. Meanwhile, the number of complaints are escalating. We are keeping a close tab on all related developments and will update the story as and when anything news worthy shows up.
