ZTE may have slammed the seven years ban by the US as “unfair,” and even China may be ready to take measures to “safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.” But all this doesn’t take away the fact that the Chinese company is in a state of turmoil, with no certainty of its future in the US.
So it’s unsurprising that experts and consumer activists are advising people in the US to refrain from buying ZTE products, especially smartphones. What forms the basis of this advice is there’s complete uncertainty whether or not ZTE will be able to provide security updates to its Android devices in the country.
While most retailers and telecom companies declined to comment, at-least a couple of mobile carriers told Reuters that they haven’t received any communication in this regard from the Chinese company.
To clarify, ZTE smartphones (both new and existing) will continue to function normally. The concern being raised here is related to monthly updates that are necessary to keep the devices up to date as far as security aspects are concerned.
