While the mainstream tech media is currently highlighting excessive battery drainage and fingerprint scanner issues on Xiaomi Mi A1 devices after the Oreo update (something that we uncovered first), another Android 8.0-triggered broken functionality has now caught our sight – camera is terribly broken.

Owners of Xiaomi’s first Android One phone are facing not one, but a constellation of camera problems. To begin with, portrait mode has gone out of order. Here’s how some of the complainants explain the problem:

Camera seems to have lost its blur feature for pictures which are near in portrait mode, also after taking a pic, if u go into pictures and click on the settings /edit button it force closes.

some portrait mode doesn’t blur the background properly

Yes, my potrait mode is not working properly. Quality of pictures is not the same as before

Apart from the broken portrait mode, camera for some is either opening with black area near the click button while in picture mode (as can be seen in the following picture) or with a completely black/blank screen in some cases.

In addition, some users are also complaining about issues like poor shutter response, flickering, poor picture quality, and camera failures.

After the oreo update my camera is flickering at times and the portrait mode feels unresponsive and sluggish

Having some flickering problem while using the camera

Whenever I open the camera app then there is a little fluctuations of black line and there is also a issue with video recording

The shutter response is bit poor than before

My camera is failing

Camera now has big problems. When I open it sometimes the screen turn black or are some black lines on the screen and has big lag, now capture less detailed photos, more noise and focus problems even in good light conditions and all of this after Oreo update

Not only help forums, even micro-blogging site Twitter has similar reports.

What’s relieving is that one of the members of the MIUI Bug Hunter Team (on the official MIUI forum) addressed an affected user, suggesting them to wait for the next update. So effectively, they acknowledged that Oreo has indeed brought along camera-related bugs.

It’s a generic statement, devoid of any details, especially on exactly which issues (or all of them) will be resolved. However, what’s good is Xiaomi is aware of Ore-triggered camera issues on Mi A1 phones, and hopefully will fix them sooner than later. In the meantime, we are keeping a close watch on all related developments, and will update as and when anything news-worthy occurs.
