YouTube’s iOS app producing crackling sound while playing videos, Google’s looking into it [updated]
Update: Some users on one of the Reddit threads are reporting that the issue is fixed for them. However, there’s is no official information regarding this from YouTube yet.
As if device overheating and battery drain issues weren’t enough, now hundreds of users are reporting – and Google has acknowledged – that YouTube for iOS is producing crackling/popping sound/noise while playing videos, effectively preventing them from using the app.
Take a look at the Reddit threads (links at the bottom of this story), and you’ll realize the magnitude of the problem. It’s been just a few hours since the problem came to light and the threads already contain a very large number of comments (possibly in hundreds).
It’s clearly an issue with YouTube for iOS, as users say viewing same videos in YouTube for Web works fine. Also, as per user reports, if you try using headphones or view a video in offline mode, then there’s no issue at all. Interestingly, some users also note that advertisements – while viewing videos – play fine as well.
It’s also worth mentioning that users of all recent iPhones (7/8/X) are reporting the problem, so there should be no device-specific angle here.
Sensing the urgency of the matter, YouTube quickly swung into action and acknowledged the issue. Here’s what Google employee Marissa (who is also the Community Manager on YouTube Help forum) said in her recent post.
We have seen other reports and are looking into it. We will report back when we have more!
We are sure Google is taking the problem on priority and a fix should be rolled out soon. Meanwhile, heavy downpour of similar complaints is being noticed on Twitter as well. Take a look for yourself:
@TeamYouTube Just a heads up there’s crackling sound when playing videos in the YouTube app. I notice that a lot of the people experiencing this issue are using the iPhone 8/8 Plus, that might have something to do with it. Additionally, the issue is gone if earphones are used.

Does anyone else have a weird static sound when people talk in YouTube videos? Like on the iPhone app I mean. I’ve tried looking it up but I can’t find anything that helps me out. It doesn’t happen with anything other than the YouTube app and it’s making me mad.

@AppleSupport after iOS 11.1.2 update, iPhone X is making crackling audio sounds, especially when using YouTube. 100% only started since updating, has been flawless up till now – any idea what this could be?

@YouTube So I’ve played the same 2 audio files in 2 different apps. I played it in the Musescore app and then I played it in the Youtube App but in the YouTube app it was crackling a lot and not anywhere else on my phone. How do I fix this?? (I use an iPhone 7 on iOS 11.2 beta 4)

Hey @YouTube the latest iphone app version has developed a crackling sound through the speaker. No other app does this including playing YouTube videos through safari, deleting and reinstalling the app doesn't work.

@TeamYouTube I’m on iOS and since your latest update I’m having crackling in my speakers on your app. iPhone 7+, it’s not my phone because my speakers work on other apps and while I play music. It’s only on YouTube that it crackles.
